Acoustic Enclosure for Cummins QSK50-DMI 1200 kVA Generator Set

Hidayah Offshore Development Project,

ISTIQ Noise Control was engaged to design, fabricate, and install a purpose-built acoustic enclosure for a Cummins QSK50-DMI 1200 kVA generator set serving the Hidayah Development Project offshore East Java, Indonesia.

The Hidayah field is located within the North Madura II Production Sharing Contract, approximately 7 km north of Madura Island. 
PC North Madura II Ltd., a PETRONAS subsidiary, operates the field and holds a 100% participating interest in the block. The field was discovered in 2021 and subsequently progressed to full development following the Final Investment Decision.


From Engineering Design to Completed Enclosure

The project involved close coordination between engineering, fabrication, and installation teams throughout the manufacturing process.

What made this project particularly satisfying for our team was the client's positive response to the quality of ISTIQ's workmanship.

For us, this is important.

An acoustic enclosure may ultimately be judged by its noise level, but the quality of fabrication, fit-up, accessibility, finishing, and attention to detail determines whether the equipment will continue to perform reliably throughout its service life.

The completed system demonstrates ISTIQ's capability to deliver engineered industrial noise-control solutions for demanding oil & gas, offshore, power generation and heavy industrial applications.

ISTIQ Scope of Work

ISTIQ's scope covered the:

  • Acoustic design
  • Detailed engineering
  • Fabrication
  • Integration with the generator package
  • Installation of the complete acoustic enclosure

The enclosure was designed around the Cummins QSK50-DMI generator package to achieve a project noise requirement of:

85 dBA measured at 1 meter from the enclosure.

The challenge was not simply to surround the generator with acoustic panels. A high-capacity diesel generator requires considerable cooling and combustion airflow, so noise reduction must be achieved without excessive airflow restriction or adverse effects on generator cooling performance.

Our design therefore considered the complete noise-control system, including the enclosure construction, ventilation openings, acoustic treatment, equipment access, and integration with the generator package.

Engineering for a Demanding Offshore Application

Offshore oil and gas applications place higher demands on equipment than ordinary commercial installations. Acoustic performance must be considered together with:

Noise control. Ventilation. Maintainability. Structural integrity. Equipment access. Reliability.

The fabrication photographs also show the enclosure being progressively assembled and integrated around the generator package, including the main acoustic structure and substantial ventilation provisions.
